Sculptra is a recently FDA approved cosmetic procedure to correct signs of hollow cheeks/fat loss from the face. The product has been frequently used in the treatment of emaciated individuals affected with the HIV virus. Sculptra has been shown to add volume to the face, erase wrinkles, fine lines, and hollow creases.
What is Sculptra made of?
Sculptra is a synthetic injectable material made of poly L lactic acid. Lactic acid is a common substance in the body and thus, there is no risk of developing allergies. Further, there is no risk of rejection of this naturally occurring chemical.

One of the benefits of Sculptra injections is that it also stimulates synthesis of collagen in the deeper tissues. Sculptra thus, has two-fold benefits. Where are Sculptra injections done?
Sculptra injections are done as an outpatient in a clinic. There are no extensive preparations required prior to the injection. Individuals who are on blood thinners, or have an active bacterial infection of skin should not under go this procedure. The injections usually do not take more than 10-15 minutes. There is no pretesting required and there is no need for general anesthesia. To prevent pain from injections, the therapist may apply a topical anesthetic 20 minutes prior to the procedure.
