Glycolic acid peels: Are they worth the money? part 5

IS glycolic acid treatment covered by insurance?

No, all chemical peels are considered cosmetic and not covered by medical insurance.

Who performs cosmesis with glycolic acid peels?

There are thousands of salons, spas, and clinics that offer peels. The majority people who perform chemical peels for cosmesis are technicians. There is zero quality control when it comes to use of chemicals in the cosmetic industry. A significant number of these individuals do not even know how to spell anti-sepsis nor do they understand the concept of patient safety. Everyone seems to be using these peeling agents- so choose your practitioner well

What is cost of glycolic acid peels?

Some of the home glycolic acid peels (20%-30%) cost anywhere from $30-$60. Cost of a single session therapy averages $70-$200. Higher strength acid peels used by a physician can cost anywhere from $1,000-$3,000.

Final point

Glycolic acid is an average chemical peel. All home chemical peels can be described in one word- bullshit. They simply do not work. Therefore, the consumer should avoid buying any type of home chemical peel.

Glycolic acid peels used at a spa or a physician office are higher strength and do the job for minor skin imperfection. For those with deep wrinkles, acne scars, or severe photo aged skin, peels are useless. You have a greater chance of developing a complication than improving your skin.

So please consumers, read about the product, ask questions, read testimonials, and always get a second opinion. There is no permanent treatment for fine lines, wrinkles or photo aged skin. Botox is perhaps the best. Most of the low strength peels are scams, the higher strength may work, but there is always the possibility of a complication, which may turn you from a princess into Godzilla.

Glycolic acid peels: Are they worth the money? part 4

How long do these minor side effects remain?

As one gets adjusted to treatment, these side effects disappear. If they persist, glycolic acid is too strong.

What are precautions after application of glycolic acid peel?

Once glycolic acid peel has been applied, one needs to avoid sun or wear a sunscreen regularly.

When does one see results?

Well, sometimes never. These peels do not work in everyone and not everyone has the same result. Some individuals only have a mild improvement, and others may have a dramatic improvement. The maximum benefits of glycolic acid peel are usually seen after 8-10 weeks. When skin improvement occurs, the new skin is much younger looking, smooth, and radiant.

Are effects of glycolic acid permanent?

Definitely not. In some cases, the cosmetic benefits only last a few weeks and in others a few months. There is no chemical peel which produces a permanent change in skin cosmesis, unless you have a complication.

Can glycolic acid cause complication?

Sure, anytime you muck round with acids and skin, bad things can happen. There are lots of individuals who will attest to complication of peels; the most common complications include:

- pain
- skin irritation
- scars
- skin discoloration
- infections

Glycolic acid peels: Are they worth the money? part 3

How does glycolic acid peel work?

Glycolic acid peel removes the most superficial layers of skin and stimulates synthesis of new skin. When higher strength acids are used, one does feel a stinging sensation (some call it painful). After the procedure, the face will look as if you have had a moderate sunburn effect

When higher strength acids are used, one may even require anesthesia because the procedure can be very painful. However, lighter strength glycolic acid peels can be used without much hassle.

What are side effects of glycolic acid peel?

All chemical peels have side effects and glycolic acid is no different. The side effects depend on strength of peel. Immediately after treatment, one will observe redness, swelling, and irritation. The duration of side effects last anywhere from a day to several days. The stronger the acid, the more longer the side effects remain
Individuals who have sensitive skin should always start with lighter strength acid. Individuals who develop continual skin redness and irritation, should use milder strength acids

How is glycolic acid available?

Today, glycolic acid is available in every type of cosmetic product. You can get a soap, detergent, liquid, wash, cream, ointment, lotion, and face wash.
Glycolic acid is frequently sold as a cream and a facial wash. Both work in a similar fashion. When applied to skin, the peel can slowly remove most superficial layers of skin. Some of the newer formulations also have a moisturizer added to prevent skin dryness and irritation.

How often should the glycolic cream and facial wash be used?

Both glycolic acid wash and cream are recommended for use twice a day

What are immediate side effects of glycolic acid peel?

Once the glycolic treatments begin, one may experience

- redness
- irritation
- itching
- stinging
- dryness

Glycolic acid peels: Are they worth the money? part 2

Who can use glycolic acid peels?

Well, there is no reason why anyone cannot use it. In general, one should avoid using chemical peels for small tiny skin lesions and especially when one is under the age of 40. There is more harm from these acids than benefit. Glycolic acid peel has been claimed to be useful for

- acne scars
- skin discoloration
- uneven skin
- photo aged skin
- wrinkles
- fine lines
- crow’s feet

How long does the procedure take?

One should not get in the habit of leaving chemicals peels on face for more than 15-25 minutes. The longer the peel is left on skin, the greater is the chance of a side effect. The recommended time for most peels is about 20 minutes

When does one see results after a glycolic acid peel?

Well, some individuals never see a response. Others see a response after 4-6 weeks. No one ever sees an immediate response. Soon after treatment, the skin starts to peel and it takes at least 4-6 weeks for new healthy skin to replace the old skin.

How often should these peels be applied?

If your skin has minor blemishes avoid all peels. They all worsen your skin and you risk developing unpleasant side effects. For those who have acne scars, one should use the peel every 6-8 weeks. If you do not see any response after the first treatment, do not be a sucker and try it again.

On what part of body can glycolic acid peels be used?

- face
- neck
- chest
- hands
- arms
- legs

Glycolic acid peels: Are they worth the money?

There are many chemical peels used in cosmetic medicine. One of the oldest is glycolic acid. Glycolic acid peels come in various strengths; the lighter strength acids are for home use and do absolutely nothing. The higher strength glycolic acids are used at a spa or a salon and used by a therapist/physician. The higher strength acids do work but they also have a higher incidence of side effects. Most individuals who have had the higher strength acid peels complain about one thing- pain.

Glycolic acids that are less than 30% are often sold for home use. In reality, these home based chemical peels do very little and are a waste of money. The vendors who market the home glycolic acid peels claim that the lower strength acids can erase wrinkles, fines lines, acne scars etc- all this can be summarized in one word- BS.

You can apply lower strength glycolic acid peels all your life and even drink gallons of it- it will do nothing for your skin, except waste your hard earned money. All this talk about soft texture, wrinkle, free skin is just a marketing ploy – so avoid home glycolic acid peels.

The higher strength glycolic acids do work well as peeling agents. These acids are quite strong and penetrate deeper layers of skin. Concentrations greater than 20% are only supposed to be used under supervision and are never approved for home use. Most cosmetic and plastic surgeons use concentrations of 20 percent and higher to treat acne scars, skin pigmentation, and photo aged skin. The effectiveness of a glycolic acid peel depends on contact time, number of sessions, skin type, and sensitivity.

Lipodissolve 101 part 4

Does lipodissolve work?

Depends whom you ask. The doctors say it is great stuff, the testimonials on cyberspace reveal the exact opposite. Further, a great many vendors of lipodissolve dilute the stuff up (make more money) and there are also reports of fake lipodissolve products (Just like at ENRON, the field of cosmetics has its share of dishonest people!)

Which part of body can be treated with Lipodissolve?

If you have money, lipodissolve can be used to remove fat from:

• Thighs
• hips
• Double chin
• neck
• cheeks and midface
• lower eye
• Upper and lower arms
• Upper and lower abdomen
• waist
• back
• Knees and legs
• calf

Is lipodissolve covered by insurance?

No, neither Medicare nor any medical plan covers “junk” or “dubious” procedures. Lipodissolve is strictly a cosmetic procedure and not covered by any medical insurance carriers. Since you will be paying for cost of the procedure, be informed, determine why you want the procedure and who you want do it for you.

What is cost of lipodissolve?

The cost does vary where you live and whom you visit. On average, the cost per session for lipodissolve is $400-$800. Total cost can run into several thousand dollars and there are no refunds

Final word

Please Consumers, before you go for lipodissolve, read the testimonials on cyberspace. This is one treatment you should think twice and still avoid. Junk is too nice a word to describe this procedure.

Lipodissolve 101 part 3

Who does lipodissolve injections?

Both physicians and many non health care workers are in the lucrative business of cosmetics. Lipodissolve injections are generally performed by health care professionals that include nurses and physicians. The reason why there are so many people performing lipodissolve is not because they want you to look nice, but because they want your money. A significant number of these individuals who do these procedures do not know the mouth from the A..E. So check into your provider’s credentials and ask for his/her experience with the procedure.

What are differences between lipodissolve and mesotherapy?

Well, they are both similar in one aspect-they do not work. Mesotherapy is a slower process and requires use of stronger chemicals whose identification is a mystery. Both procedures require numerous sessions but mesotherapy is many times more expensive than Lipodissolve.

How many treatments are required?
Most individuals require 4-6 treatments spaced over 4 weeks to achieve the desired results

What if the fat is located deep in the body?

The technique of Lipodissolve can be combined with ultrasound to achieve results that are more effective. A hand held ultrasound probe is applied to the fat pockets before and after the Lipodissolve injections. The vendors claim that ultrasound itself also helps mobilize fat pockets.

How many injections are done in one session?

Lipodissolve injections are not done on the entire body. A few large fat pockets are identified and are injected in one session. The procedure does not require anesthesia and does not suck out fat like in liposuction.

Why can’t many injections be done in one setting?

Well, two reasons. Several sessions means the surgeon gets to make more money and secondly, when you get injected with a cup full of fluid everywhere on your body- you will hurt, there will be large bumps all over your body and you will feel like crap for a long time.

Lipodissolve 101 part 2

Are there any complications from lipodissolve?

Sure, sometimes the needle can hit a nerve or chemicals are injected into the muscles. This results in excruciating pain that can last a long time. If the needle hits a blood vessel, hematoma can occur.

Is there downtime after lipodissolve injections?

Yes, one needs at least 1-3 days off depending on size of area treated. When lipodissolve is injected around face and neck, bruising can be extensive and last many days. To hide bruises, one may need to use camouflage or make-up.

What is in the formulation of lipodissolve?

Lipodissolve formulation is made up of two naturally occurring chemicals. Both phosphatidylcholine and deoxycholate act as detergents and have been postulated to dissolve fat pockets. Both phosphatidylcholine and deoxycholate are normally stored in the gall bladder and help in the normal digestion of fatty foods. Evidence in the laboratory revealed that these two fat compounds could dissolve fat particles in the gut. So now, scientists have come up with a formula to use these substances to dissolve fat underneath the skin

IS there any preparation required prior to the procedure?

No, just the usual cosmetic surgeon chitchat sucking up to patients, making false promises. To make you feel great, photos will be obtained of you before the procedure. After procedures do not exist because the procedure never works

To date, Lipodissolve has been used to treat the following conditions:

- male breast enlargement
- cellulite deposits anywhere on the body
- fat deposits around eye
- lipomas
- fat mound on the pubis
- fat pockets near genitals
- revision of scars
- improve unevenness that occurs after liposuction
- residual fat remaining after weight loss surgery

Lipodissolve 101

The search for a treatment to dissolve fat is endless. Over the past 3 decades, numerous treatments have been developed and marketed but none is effective. Now we have Lipodissolve.

Lipodissolve is a relatively novel procedure that is hyped up to dissolve fat pockets in the body. Lipodissolve has been used in Europe for more than 3 decades but has only recently being introduced to the North American market.
Lipodissolve consists of a number of injections into localized fat pockets. The injections are made up of a formulation of chemicals that act like detergents. These chemicals break up the fat without causing any damage to the skin or muscle tissues. The chief constituent of Lipodissolve is phosphatidylcholine. The dissolved fat is then slowly removed by the body over the next few weeks to months.

When should one get Lipodissolve?

In general, Lipodissolve is recommended when exercise and dietary changes fail to remove small pockets of fat and cellulite. The providers of Lipodissolve treatment claim that after therapy, most individuals develop a well-contoured body with smoother, softer and taut skin. It is also claimed that Lipodissolve can obviate the need for tummy tuck surgery and liposuction.

Is the procedure painful?

Definitely
, it is very painful. The needle goes deep into the fat pockets and does hurt. This pain is increased with frequent injections. The pain is of moderate intensity and does not immediately disappear. Women who have had these injections claim that pain can last many days

What are other side effects of lipodissolve injections?

The most common side effects are:

- swelling
- tenderness
- bruising

These side effects usually remain for 4-7 days and then slowly disappear.

Vela Shape- the treatment that does nothing! Part 3

Who should not undergo Vela Shape?

Those with no money are definitely out. Individuals who can surf the Net, read testimonials and understand what a side effect/complication is should not undergo this procedure.

Other individuals who should not undergo Vela shape therapy are those who have an acute skin infection or any type of collagen vascular disorder like lupus. Individuals with a recent suntan or those who are taking accutane should wait for several months before undergoing treatment.

Does Vela shape work in everyone?

Well, you will be lucky to find one individual in whom this treatment has worked. The majority of testimonials all are negative. The only people who claim the treatment works are the doctors and providers of this therapy

How many sessions of Vela shape are required?

Because the treatment brings in money for doctors, you can rest assured you will undergo many sessions. Most individuals get conned into paying for 3-8 treatments

Is Vela shape treatment permanent?

Well, it does not do anything. Moreover, no, there is no treatment in all of cosmetics that can cure cellulite

When does one see results after Vela shape?

Most people never see any change except lightness in the pockets (from loss of money). The vendors claim that vela shape does not produce instantaneous results and neither does it work in everyone. The results start to appear at the end of 4-6 weeks (dream on)

IS Vela shape covered by insurance?

Vela shape is considered a cosmetic procedure and not covered by Medicare or any medical insurance plan.

What is cost of vela shape?

The cost of each session is quite variable depending on where you go, who does it and how extensive is the procedure. In general, each session may cost anywhere from $250-$500. Today, many spas and clinics do offer discounts if you enroll in a multiple package program. A package deal can cost anywhere from $1500 -$2500.

Who actually does the procedure?

Rest assured, it is never the doctor unless you are the President. It is usually a nurse or a technician. Today, almost everyone is offering cosmetic procedures at large discounts. These cosmetologists can be found on every corner in any town in America. The field of cosmetics is a magnet for attracting unscrupulous people. So read about the procedure, check out credentials, ask questions, and always get a second opinion.

Final Point

Cosmetic surgery sometimes provides good results but more often than not, it does little to change anything in your body. So be realistic and spend your hard-earned money on something that works. For those who have cellulite and even those who do not, the best way to look good is by changing your lifestyle, eating healthy and exercise. This simple advice is free, there are no complications, it is cheap, and works

Vela Shape- the treatment that does nothing! Part 2

On what part of body can vela shape be used?

The small portable device can be used on almost any part of the body including waistline, hips, thighs, neck, chest, neck, upper arms, calves, and stomach.

Where is Vela Shape performed?

Vela shape is an outpatient procedure usually performed at a spa or a doctor’s clinic. There are no preparations required prior to the procedure. The procedure does not involve any injections or anesthesia. The device has a suction, which lifts the tissues, and radiofrequency waves are generated. The device is gently massaged over the area and one can feel some heat generated. The radiofrequency waves penetrate deeper layers of skin and break up the fat particles. The combination of suction and massage helps to mobilize the fat which is then slowly removed by the body.

Does Vela Shape hurt?

Well, does a cigarette burn hurt? Sure, the majority of testimonials on cyberspace claim that the treatment hurts like hell. The only good thing is that the pain is not long lasting but not something that you will soon forget. By the way, the doctors who perform this treatment claim it feels like a deep soothing massage. The reply to this comment online is Kiss my A..E.

Does Vela Shape have any side effects?

Sure, anytime you start to poke your body with heat, one can expect side effects. Redness, swelling and bruising are common. These side effects are transient and disappear in 3-7 days

Are there any complications after Vela Shape?

Most definitely. There are lots of testimonials about skin pigmentations and scarring after Vela Shape. These complications are permanent

Vela Shape- the treatment that does nothing!

Vela shape is a relatively new method of remodeling the body outline using a small machine that gives out radiofrequency waves (same as what intense sunlight does but the process is more controlled). Vela Shape has been approved by the FDA not because it works but because it is safe (the treatment does diddly squat).

Over the last few years, Vela shape treatments are offered in every spa, salon, clinic, doctor’s office and even non health care professionals perform the treatment.

What does Vela Shape do?

To be honest- nothing. The vendors and health care professionals claim that it can remove fat and cellulite from your body (if anyone believes that simply applying heat to the body can decrease cellulite- that individual is a sucker. How many people have ever lost cellulite/fat by sitting out in the Sun?)

IS there any data that suggests Vela Shape works?

No, there is no data. Vela shape was devised in Europe and as usual, the Europeans always come up with outrageous claims. There is not a single clinical trial that shows that Vela shape works. In North America, most claims about Vela Shape are made by doctors.

Are there testimonials about Vela Shape?

Yes, lots of negative testimonials. Almost all consumers claim that the treatment is painful, expensive and does not work. Further, there is a long list of complications including burning, scarring and pigmentation (same thing if you were left in the Sahara Desert for 4 weeks)

Who can undergo Vela Shape?

Anyone who is foolish and has money to burn. The vendors claim that anyone with cellulite can undergo this therapy. The treatment is supposed to be an alternate to liposuction or weight loss surgery. Those individuals who have undergone liposuction and have residual fat lumps can also undergo Vela Shape

Mesotherapy Facts Vs. Fiction Part 3

How many mesotherapy sessions are required?

- if you look desperate, many sessions
- if you look pretty, many sessions
- if you have cellulite, many sessions
- if you do not have cellulite, many sessions
- but if you are broke, no session.

Everyone. is booked for multiple sessions. This is a general trend in cosmetic surgery. Just like going to a car mechanic. Each session is spaced 2 weeks apart

Is there any anesthesia required with mesotherapy?

No, unlike liposuction, Mesotherapy does not involve general anesthesia or large surgical incisions. There is almost no downtime and recovery is rapid.

Does every respond to mesotherapy

No, unfortunately, most individuals do not respond to Mesotherapy and the reasons are unknown. It is difficult to predict who will or who won’t respond to the treatment. Sorry there are no refunds after you have spent $2, 000 or more

Is mesotherapy covered by medical insurance?

In general, all good health insurance companies do not cover “junk” procedures. Mesotherapy is a considered a cosmetic procedure and not covered by Medicare or any medical insurance company.

What is cost of mesotherapy?

The average cost per session of Mesotherapy is anywhere from $300-$650. Discounts are available if one gets more sessions. Do not worry if you have no money, the doctors are great at arranging a payment plan for you- like putting your house up for sale!

Does mesotherapy work?

Only in the minds of the doctors and cosmetologists. There is not a single piece of clinical evidence that backs up any claims made by these health care professionals. No random clinical studies exist – but there are a lot of testimonials on cyberspace. Almost all individuals say that mesotherapy sucks big time and is waste of money

As a Final point
, please consumers, read about cosmetic procedures before you jump and get one. Cosmetic Medicine is full of bogus procedures and just as many bad health care professionals. This is more true in the field of cosmetic medicine. While there are some good doctors who do a lot of good, there are just as many bad doctors who do no good. Mesotherapy in one small word is best considered- bogus. Avoid it

Mesotherapy Facts Vs. Fiction Part 2

Who can get mesotherapy treatment?

Well, you need to have money. There are no free injections. You also need to have cellulite but this is not a major criterion. Cosmetologists have a habit of making you feel and look unattractive. They tend to see imperfections in your body which do not exist.

So assuming you meet the above criteria, where can mesotherapy be used?

Mesotherapy has been widely used to remove fat from face, thighs, neck, upper arm, buttocks, calves, chin, waist, and abdomen.

Is it like liposuction?

No, liposuction works, mesotherapy does not, nor is it a substitute for liposuction.

Is mesotherapy a replacement for surgery?

Mesotherapy is not a replacement for any medical disorder nor is it an alternative treatment for cellulite. It is a treatment for people who are foolish and have money to waste.

What happens during mesotherapy?

You lie down, the physician injects your fat lumps and in 30 minutes you go home. There is no other fancy stuff. One does not have to wear any garments, stockings or apply any creams. It is claimed that the injections are painless and recovery is very fast.

Do the needle injections hurt?

Sure, ever come across a needle prick that does not hurt? Almost all people who had had mesotherapy complain about pain and bruising

Are there any side effects with mesotherapy?

The doctors say the injections are not painful. Upon completion of the procedure, most individuals develop swelling and bruising at site of injection. The swelling and bruising subsides within 4-10 days. Besides swelling and bruising, some patients may develop pain and experience a numbing sensation at site of injection.

When does one see results after mesotherapy?

Most people see no results.
The results of Mesotherapy are not immediate and the doctors claim that they appear at the end of 4-8 weeks. The maximal cosmetic benefits are supposed to occur at 2-3 months (enough time for you to have put down a nice down payment on the doctor’s Mercedes)

Mesotherapy Facts Vs. Fiction

Cellulite is an upsetting skin disorder for many women and men. Cellulite commonly occurs at the back of upper thighs, around the buttocks and lower legs. Besides being unattractive, it is also lumpy, bumpy and causes unevenness in skin texture. Over the years, many treatments have been developed to remove cellulite from the body. SO far, none has proven to be either very successful or cheap. Liposuction perhaps works the best but it is invasive, painful, has downtime and is expensive. Now, one of the latest in a long line of non surgical treatments for cellulite is mesotherapy

What is mesotherapy?

If there ever was a treatment which had SCAM written all over it, mesotherapy would be a prize winner.

So what exactly is it?

Mesotherapy is a non-surgical technique of getting rid of fat pockets and cellulite from most parts of your body (it also gets rid of your money). The procedure is very simple to perform. The physician injects a special formula of chemicals into the fat pockets. These chemicals do magic- dissolve the fat. The eventual result is a soft, smoother, and aesthetically pleasing contour line of the body.

What is this chemical formula?

Well, that is a state secret- only the company’s knows it. Just imagine most consumers complain about proper labels on food and medications- many consumers want to know what exactly they are buying or eating- but not so when it comes to mesotherapy. It is shocking to know that doctors do not reveal the nature of this chemical formula- and yet people allow themselves to be injected. Would one take a pill which has no label? Would one ingest an unknown medication found in the cupboard at home? Consumers, please wake up!

Has mesotherapy been used elsewhere?

Looks like Europeans are always guinea pigs (suckers) for anything new that is invented. Mesotherapy has been widely used in Europe to treat localized fat pockets and cellulite from various parts of the body. Whether Mesotherapy works in European is questionable because the majority of testimonials are extremely negative.

Microdermabrasion- another cosmetic device which does zilch! part 3

Do these home Microdermabrasion devices work?

Of course not.
When a device is as good as junk at a salon or a spa, then there is no reason to believe it is going to be any different at home

How many treatment sessions are required to improve skin?

You can visit a salon or a spa for Microdermabrasion all your life, and you will not see any changes. The only difference is that you will weigh less from losing your money in your pockets. The cosmetologists should be ashamed of scamming you the first time, but shame on you if you go again.

Final Point

There really is nothing positive to say about Microdermabrasion. All this hype about it being a lunchtime procedure, fast, and no downtime is BS. It does nothing. It is difficult to find one person in this entire universe who has even had one facial line erased with Microdermabrasion. It may polish your skin for a few hours but as far as anti aging is concerned, it does no such thing.

There are many individuals who perform Microdermabrasion. The lure of money has many non-qualified individuals performing all types of cosmetic skin care procedures. So before you seek out who does your Microdermabrasion, ask for referrals, check out the place, and if in doubt go and get a second opinion. Moreover, even after a second opinion, do not go. Save your hard-earned money for something that works-, unfortunately Microdermabrasion is not one of these treatments

Microdermabrasion- another cosmetic device which does zilch! part 2

Does Microdermabrasion have any complication?
No, because it does not do anything in the first place. The only complication is a tired hand from holding the device next to your face for days hoping to see some skin changes. Does wiping your face with a towel have complications? - No, unless your towel is made of thorns or sharp nails!)

Who does Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is done everywhere and by everyone
. Every Tom, Dick, Harry, Filipino, manicurist, pedicurist, spa, clinic, or salon does Microdermabrasion. There is zero training or skill required to use the device. The procedure takes about 20 minutes and there are no extensive preparations required prior to the procedure

One can go for Microdermabrasion during a lunch break. There are no needles, anesthesia, pain, nothing- just a battery operated device, which resemble a man’s electric shaver.

Is there downtime with Microdermabrasion?

There is no down time with Microdermabrasion. Thank God for that. For a treatment that does zilch, any downtime would be shocking

When does one see the cosmetic benefits of Microdermabrasion?

Well, you will look the same as when you came in, except that your face will look clean for a few hours. The vendors of this therapy say that Microdermabrasion is great if you want your face shinning before a big event.

Are there any Microdermabrasion portable devices?

Sure, just like a lot of nonsense weight loss devices, Microdermabrasion devices are also for sale. One can buy these junk machines anywhere from $50-$300, depending on how easy you are as a sucker.

Microdermabrasion- another cosmetic device which does zilch!

All of a sudden, everyone talks about Microdermabrasion as if it is the best thing since Viagra. Let me get the facts out first. Microdermabrasion is a device with some fast rotating crystals inside. When the device is held close to the skin, the spinning action gently removes some dead skin. That is it. You could do the same thing with scrubbing your face with a decent soap or use a rough piece of cloth- and for this fancy piece of equipment you pay anywhere from $30-$100 per session. I do have to add that Microdermabrasion does give the skin a polished look that will last a few hours.

So what is big deal with Microdermabrasion?

People who sell this therapy claim it is the newest thing in cosmetic skincare-this nonsensical claim is like saying the condom was invented yesterday! For decades, cosmetologists have been trying to create devices which can abrade the skin using a variety of equipment. In the olden days, the devices used were harsh and this caused a lot of skin damage. Today, the devices are small, compact, gentle but do nothing at all. You just pay for the comfort of sitting in a posh office and get treated like a King or Queen for 30 minutes.

The Microdermabrasion device is hyped up to remove dirt and oils from face (you could do this at home with soap and then look pretty with make up for a lot less).

So what can Microdermabrasion treat?

Well, the doctors and everyone else in the business of cosmetics says it can treat wrinkles, skin creases, acne scars, skin discolorations, photo aged skin and can reduce all other skin imperfections on the face (that means it does jack s..t)

So how does this device work?

Well, you sit in an office, spa, or a clinic. The device is held close to skin surface. Microdermabrasion device has fine crystals that rotate at high speed. The spinning action removes dead skin, debris, and oil. Today, various devices contain different type of crystals- like copper, diamond, silicon etc. The end result is a soft skin, which is shiny, polished, radiant and pleasing.

Facts about lips and & lip enhancement Part 3

For temporary lip augmentation, collagen is as good as any dermal filler. There are many types of collagen dermal fillers. Each has its own pros and cons and different individuals respond differently. Collagen is by far the cheapest but does not last long. The other drawback of collagen is that one needs to be assessed for allergy prior to injections. The hyaluronic acid dermal fillers like Hyaloform and Restylane give excellent results, but are also expensive. Lips often look soft, plump, and luscious with Hyaloform

For those individual who want to tattoo their lips- this should be done before lip enhancement.

Other temporary implants include harvested fat, fascia, or dermis. However, use of patient’s own fat, human collagen or fascia is also prone to resorption (dissolving), and these implants require two incisions. One incision to get the fat and the other incision on the lips to implant it. Fat does give good results and lasts longer, but is very expensive and does tend to form uneven bumps.

Two negatives about lip augmentation. Lip augmentation is painful and does not always work. In a number of individuals, the procedure is a downright failure.

The best results are obtained with a decent surgeon. The decent surgeons also charge a lot of money. The majority of cosmetic surgeons and health care professionals who perform lip augmentation have mediocre surgical skills but have excellent business acumen- so choose your provider well. Once lips have been augmented well, they not only look luscious but kissing is even better

Facts about lips and & lip enhancement Part 2

At the end of every lip augmentation, lips look grossly large and ugly. However, this is just for a few days. As the swelling and redness wears off, lips tend to take on a sexy look. To decrease swelling in the lips, it is recommended that one apply an ice pack on lips for the first 24 hours. In addition, sleeping upright for the first 24 hours can help reduce swelling.

The most important aspect of lip enhancement is that patients have to be realistic. Doctors tend to hype up every new procedure and patients become unrealistic. Because there is a lot of money to be made in cosmetic surgery, doctors have a habit of promising more than what is actual reality. Everyone nowadays thinks that cosmetic surgery can make one beautiful instantly. While this does happen sometimes, there are just as many people who develop unexpected complications and develop severe disfiguring. That is nature of the game. Cosmetic surgery is a fine balance between Gorgeous and Godzilla.

One should never go for permanent lip filler first time. If you do not like the results, you are in big s...t. Go for a temporary filler, see what it feels like and whether you love it. It may cost slightly more to get two procedures, but at least you will know whether to go ahead or stop. When a permanent filler has been inserted, it is impossible to remove it- and removing it can also cause more damage to your lips.

After lip augmentation, lips do tend to remain swollen for a few weeks. As the swelling decreases, lips achieve a better aesthetic look.

Facts about lips and & lip enhancement

All of us age and unfortunately with time, lips began to appear thin, saggy, and dry. The sagging may cause unevenness in lips making them slightly unattractive. For many years, there was not much that could be done about sagging or thin lips. Today, however, things have changed. Lips can be made beautiful with use of dermal fillers. When these dermal fillers are injected, in just 30 mins, one can have nice, luscious, plump, erotic, and younger looking lips- at least that is how it is supposed to happen.

All lip enhancement injections are performed as an outpatient at a spa or a clinic. This is the one procedure that physicians perform themselves. For the consumer, it is important to know who is performing the procedure because there are also some nurses who perform these procedures- nurses are cheaper than physicians but the results are not always guaranteed and complications are more common (plus nurses have zero training in cosmetic surgery- passing an instrument to a surgeon does not automatically qualify one to the status of surgeon).

Prior to injection, the site of is marked. Lip enhancement is painful (if you do not believe me, take a pin, and prick your lips!). The surgeons do numb the area with a local anesthetic but pain does not completely disappear. There are also some dermal fillers which are formulated with a local anesthetic. In any case, be prepared to feel some pain.

One reason why lip enhancement is done while the patient is awake is because the surgeon can actually see the results while he/she is performing the injections. During general anesthesia, lips tend to collapse and become flaccid. This makes it very difficult for the surgeon to appreciate the symmetry.

Luscious Lips part 2

Like any surgery procedure, lip augmentation is not complication free. For every one good result, there are about 3-4 individuals who are not happy. The most common complications of lip augmentation include the following:

- Allergy to the implant- persistent redness,
itching and pain
- prolonged redness
- swelling which is obvious
- itching which is persistent
- hardness around the lips- especially at the
injection site
- excessive bleeding which may go on for a few
weeks
- lip asymmetry is very common
- migration of the implant is also common
- extrusion of the implant when the procedure is
not done right

In most cases, the swelling, redness and bruising only last 3-7 days. When asymmetry occurs, revision is required. If there is an infection, the permanent dermal filler has to be removed. Never believe any surgeon who says he/she has never had a complication.

All individuals who are going to be treated with collagen fillers need an allergy test. If there is evidence of allergy, lip augmentation is not for you. You may have to choose a non-collagen dermal filler.

Individuals who have an active herpetic infection, a history of contact dermatitis, lip infection or an ulcer on the lips, should wait at least 2-4 months before get lip augmentation. Any stress on lips can easily trigger a herpes infection.

All individual who are allergic to the anesthetic, lidocaine, should avoid getting lip augmentation. Other individuals who should not undergo lip augmentation include those with collagen vascular disease (e.g. scleroderma, lupus, or sjogren's).

There is no perfect dermal filler. The fact that there are so many fillers on the market should immediately inform the consumer that none of them is ideal. Each dermal filler has its pros and cons. The only way to determine which dermal filler is good for you is to discuss it with a knowledgeable surgeon who is more interested in your lips than your money.

The most important criteria for success is a good surgeon. Today, many people are performing lip augmentation. There are some physicians who have had no training in cosmetic surgery and there are also many nurses who think that they do not need any training. So talk to people, get a referral, read about the procedure, and ask questions. Since you are paying for it, always seek a second opinion if you are not satisfied. When done well, lip augmentation can produce luscious, sexy, and erotic lips.

Luscious Lips part 1

The most important part of lip augmentation with dermal fillers is that the injection has to be done right. This is because unevenness or asymmetry of lips can occur very easily. The dermal filler has to be placed in the right location to produce the desired result.

There are two Permanent implants, AlloDerm and Gore Tex. These two can only be inserted in the lips via small incisions along the corner of the mouth. Once the dermal fillers have been inserted, they mix with the tissues and gradually fill up with water. The lips then appear plump. The incisions do hurt a wee bit afterwards.

Gore -Tex
is a plastic like material and is quite well tolerated by the body. It is easy to insert. Rarely, the plastic may become firm and the lips will feel hard.

After the procedure, most people can return to their normal lifestyle within 1-3 days. The lips do appear swollen and bruised for a few days. Once can hide the dark red marks with lipstick. Complete recovery after lip augmentation can take 5-7 days.

For all consumers, never go for permanent lip augmentation in the beginning. Lip augmentation is not for everyone and it does not always produce the expected result. One has to be realistic. There is too much hype about this procedure and there are many individuals who have had a poor response. So select a temporary dermal filler the first time. A good choice may be juvederm or restylane. They both last about 6-9 months and you will get an idea what lips augmentation is all about. If you like it, you can select a permanent filler the next time.

Luscious Lips

The second most common cosmetic procedure after breast augmentation is making lips plump and sexy. While the majority of individuals who seek lip augmentation are women, men are also fast catching up. Having a nice plump set of lips is always sexy and erotic.

Today, lip augmentation has become a refined technique with excellent results most of the time. In most cases, lip augmentation is done with dermal fillers. There are many types of dermal fillers on the market and selection of which one can be difficult. In most cases, it is the physician who selects the dermal filler. The dermal fillers already come as a solution or in a prefilled syringe. Some dermal fillers are like thin plastic and sometimes even fat is used to plump-up lips. For the plastic type lip filler, one needs to make a tiny incision to insert them.

Despite all the hype about permanent lip fillers, there are just a few and even those are not completely permanent. The majority of dermal fillers are temporary and last anywhere from 3-9 months. The newer materials may last a few years.

In some cases, fat is obtained from buttocks or abdomen and then injected in the lips. This requires surgery to get fat from the buttock area. The big advantage of fat is that it is your own natural body substance, lasts a little longer, but is also prone to unevenness in the lips. Fat usually does not mold well and can cause bumps in the lips.

The business of cosmetics is jam packed with a lot of people offering a variety of therapies. Nurses are doing lasers, technicians are performing Aluma, and doctors are making the money. Then there are the vendors who come up with a new device each week. Therefore, the best advice is avoid all of them. Before you seek any type of treatment, read about it, get to know the complications and what it costs.

Aluma: Yet another anti wrinkle product

What is Aluma?

Well, first, we had lasers and now we have devices that emit radiofrequency waves. The latest in a line of skin care products that are hyped to erase lines and wrinkles is Aluma- fancy name for a crappy device. Aluma goes one better than previous devices- it has a vacuum and also emits radiofrequency waves. The radiofrequency waves penetrate the deep layers of skin and induce remodeling of collagen. The end result is a younger, firmer, and smoother looking skin- at least those are the claims. What the vacuum is supposed to do I am not sure but I guess suck the smoke away. Perhaps it may suck the fat or cellulite?

Who performs Aluma therapy?

The physicians generally never do it. There are technicians who perform the therapy. Unless you are related to someone in Hollywood, you are going to get a technician. The doctors only suck up to the stars.

Where is the procedure done?

Aluma is done as an outpatient treatment in a clinic or at a spa. The procedure rarely takes more than 30 minutes. There are no extensive preparations prior to the procedure. The skin site is marked, cleaned and then the technician may apply a cold pack or a topical anesthetic. Following this, Aluma is held close to the skin and activated. The vacuum is also switched on. The waves penetrate the skin and somehow only go to the collagen and elastin molecules and remodel them (funny because when one gets burnt at home, it affects the entire skin- but when the doctors apply heat, it only affects collagen- perhaps the extra cost is due to telepathy?)

Does Aluma have side effects?

When you play with heat, of course bad things can happen. All individuals develop some degree of skin redness and swelling after treatment. These side effects are transient and disappear in 12-24 hours. One can use make-up to hide the redness.

Can complications occur after Aluma?

Most definitely. Moreover, they do happen. The heat source can cause scarring, skin discoloration, blisters, and keloid formation. While these side effects are rare, the skin discoloration can be permanent.

ActiveFX- another laser? part 3

When does one see results after Active FX?

Sometimes never. The results of Active FX are not visible for at least 4-8 weeks. The maximum cosmetic benefits are seen at 2-3 months. The majority of people who undergo Active FX are not satisfied with the treatment

Is the treatment covered by medical insurance health plans?

No, neither Medicare or any private health insurance plans covers the cost of active FX

What is cost of active FX?

Well, not a lot according to the physicians who do it. Only a mere $3,000-$8,000. There are no refunds when the treatment does not work

Does it work in everyone?

Definitely not. Many testimonials on cyberspace claim that it is not what the doctors make it out to b. Many see no improvement in their skin. Those who do see improvement claim that the effects are short lived.

Final Word

Today, every tom, dick, harry and a lot of health care personnel are into lasers and facial rejuvenation. Besides doctors, many nurses have gotten into this lucrative business. While complications are rare, they do occur. These complications are more likely with individuals who have no clue about lasers. For those who have money and would like to try out active FX, select your provider well. Also, remember that it is never the physician who performs the treatment- it is a technician. The physician only does the procedure when you are someone special.

For those who have little money to waste, avoid Active FX. It is expensive, painful and there is zero guarantee that it will work. Moreover, even when it works, the results are only a few months. So the choice is simple, a wrinkle free skin for a few months and no food, or live under a roof, eat comfortably and buy presents for yourself.

ActiveFX- another laser? part 2

Is Active FX treatment permanent?

No the only thing permanent about Active FX is that you will waste a lot of money. No, active FX is not a permanent cure for fine lines, wrinkles or any other skin disorder. Most individuals see skin blemishes return in 3-9 months

IS there any thing one has to do after the treatment?

Yes, to delay return of wrinkles, stop smoking, avoid intense sun, wear a sunscreen when going out and dress in protective garments

Where is Active FX treatment done?

Active FX is an outpatient treatment done at a clinic or spa. There are no extensive preparations required prior to the procedure.

How is the treatment done?

The face is rinsed and gently dried. The therapist will apply a topical anesthetic or a cold ice pack 20 minutes prior to the procedure. The Active FX device is held close to the skin surface and activated. The beam penetrates the skin and generates heat. The heat somehow goes into the deeper layer and remodels tissues. The eventual result is a nice firm, smooth, wrinkle free skin – at least this is how it is supposed to work

How long is the procedure?

In general, expect to spend about 45-60 minutes at the clinic. After the treatment, most individual develop mild redness, swelling, and some bruising. These transient side effects disappear in 2-3 days. One can use mascara to hide the reddish discoloration. The skin texture is rough for a few weeks. Thus, one should apply a moisturizer and keep the skin clean. After the procedure, one should avoid sun exposure, otherwise the skin will turn very dark.

When can one return back to work?

In general, the downtime depends on extent of the procedure. Most people can return back to work in 24-48 hours

Does the treatment hurt?

Yes, 100 percent. Everyone says it hurts – like hell. Feels like a hot needle but only lasts a few seconds.

ActiveFX- another laser?

Everyday, cosmetic physicians seem to come up with new lasers. If all the previous lasers were all that damn good as advertized, then why is there a new laser being introduced into the cosmetic market? The reason -all of them are junk.

What is Active FX?

Active FX is a laser-based treatment that the doctors say can be used to treat any type of skin disorder. This includes:

- Fine lines
- Wrinkles
- Skin pigmentations
- Acne scars
- Sagging skin

What is so great about Active FX?

The doctors claims that Active FX has one major advantage over other lasers- it does not injure normal tissue and one see cosmetic benefits immediately (I thought the same thing had been said of every other laser previously invented by the cosmetic industry!)

Who can undergo Active FX treatments?

Well, any one with money

Who cannot undergo Active FX treatment?

Those individuals with diabetes, active skin infection, those who take blood-thinning medications, or those who have a collagen vascular disorder like lupus are not candidates. Moreover, if you do not have money, then the cosmetic doctors never offer free services.

On what part of skin can Active FX be used?

Active FX has been designed to rejuvenate the face, but today, many cosmetic physicians offer the treatment for sagging skin on the neck, upper arms, elbows, and knees.

Thermacool 101 part 3

After thermacool, what should I do?

Start saving money for the next treatment. Also keep away from sun for the next 4-6 weeks and wear sunscreen. Apply skin moisturizer and maintain general care of the skin

Are there any risks or complications with thermacool?

Sure, anytime you muck around with heat and skin, bad things can happen. There have been reports of burns, blisters, skin discoloration and scars. Some of these are permanent.

Does thermacool work in everyone?

Definitely not. The cosmetic physicians have hyped up this treatment but there are reports that it does diddlysquat in many patients. There are many anecdotal reports from patients that the treatment does nothing. there is no way of way of telling ahead of time who will respond and who won't. But you still have to pay the full amount for the treatment. Sorry, there are no refunds.

Is thermacool covered by insurance?

No, thermacool is a cosmetic procedure and neither Medicare nor any health insurance company covers the cost.

What is cost of thermacool?

Thermacool is not cheap. A single session may cost anywhere from $700-$4,000. Do not worry, doctors are great at arranging financial payment plans for you (Some of them even have their own banks!)

Final point

Thermacool is just another fancy cosmetic skin care treatment with a lot of hype. For the consumer who desperately wants to get rid of their wrinkles, try Botox because it definitely works. Thermacool is expensive, painful and often fails to work.

All consumers should be realistic and start to read about cosmetic procedures. All of cosmetic surgery is about money- your money. So be informed, ask questions, and talk to people. Thermacool can cost upwards of $2,000 and more and you will not get your money back if it does not work.

Since you are paying for the treatment, take your time in selecting the best treatment. A few months of having wrinkles will not kill you- so be informed and get to know what works and what does not. At the present, it is hard to recommend thermacool, not because it is very expensive but because it lacks frank patient testimonials and does not always work.

Thermacool 101 part 2

Does thermacool hurt?

Well, try holding a burning cigarette close to your skin and you will quickly find out. All these gimmicks with heat and laser hurt. The only good thing is that the pain only lasts a few seconds but is repeated over and over again. Some of the latest devices also have a cooling tip that minimizes pain (but does not always work). Thermacool can be performed in about 30 minutes.

What is recovery like?

After thermacool, almost everyone develops some degree of redness and swelling. Some even develop bruising if the procedure is extensive. Blisters have also been known to occur (sure, if you apply heat to skin). These side effects are transient and disappear in 1-3 days.

When do I start to look pretty?

The results of thermacool are not instant. The skin starts to improve over the next 2-4 weeks but the maximum cosmetic benefits are seen at 2-3 months. There are some people who see no improvement at all.

Is thermacool a permanent treatment?

The only permanent in life is death. Thermacool is only a temporary cure for fine lines. Within a few months after treatment, you will have the same lines and wrinkles again. To keep the wrinkle free look, you need to have many future treatments every 2-9 months. Even though doctors claim that the results last a few years, this is hogwash.

Are there any patient testimonials?

There are very few patient testimonials but there is not a single scientific study to document that thermacool does what the doctors claim. All the testimonials are by doctors and the vendors who sell this device. Have you ever heard any doctor bad mouth any treatment he/she offers?

Is there any downtime after Thermacool?

Well, this depends on how extensive your skin was rejuvenated. For small skin blemishes, there is little downtime. However, if you have your entire back or chest treated, you will need time to recover. For facial redness, one can use make-up to hide the blemish.

Thermacool 101

What is thermacool?

Thermacool is a new device developed to help rejuvenate the skin and erase some signs of aging. Thermacool is a small hand held device that generates radiofrequency waves. As the waves enter the skin, they generate heat. This heat then induces the collagen molecules to tighten and remodel. This is then supposed to create skin, which appears, firmer, younger and wrinkle free. At least this is the game plan.

What part of the body can be treated with thermacool?

Initially the treatment was only for the face and neck. Now almost every part of your body can be burnt with thermacool. The upper arms, inner thigh, neck, waist, chest, buttocks, breasts, elbows, knees – You name it; thermacool can treat it- of course you will be paying for it.

Can thermacool be used on all types of skin?

Yes, that is what the cosmetic doctors claim. As long as you have the money, thermacool works great. It can erase all your fine lines, wrinkles, skin pigmentations, and acne scars.

Where is thermacool performed?

Thermacool is an outpatient procedure done at a spa or a clinic. There are no extensive preparations required before the procedure. You come to the clinic, bring a lot of CASH and in 30 minutes it is all over

Can Thermacool be used in all individuals?

Well, not really. Individuals with very sensitive skin, diabetic, those with an active skin infection, recent out break of herpes, or those with disorders like lupus better not get treated with thermacool. It can make things a lot of worse.

What is the procedure like?

You sit down; the face is rinsed and dried. An ice pack or a local anesthetic is applied for 20 minutes prior to the procedure. The device is then held close to the skin and activated. The radiofrequency waves penetrate the skin and then do magic (hope no one believes that holding a heat source close to the skin will somehow cause the collagen to remodel and tighten the skin!)

Acne Scars 101 Part 2

Once an acne scar has occurred, it is never pleasant looking and no one brags about it. Acne scars can have a big impact on emotional status of the individual. The ugly scars lead to anxiety, isolation, difficulty in social life, depression and chronic embarrassment.

As of today, there is no ideal method to prevent acne scars. The biggest problem is that it is not possible to know who will develop scars. The best way to prevent acne scars is to seek early treatment. The one other thing all individuals should do is stop squeezing the pimple(s) either manually or with any mechanical device- this is a guaranteed method of inducing a scar. Most skin doctors recommend early treatment if the acne is inflamed or of the nodular cystic type.

Is there anything for acne scars? Yes, the last decade has seen a number of decent treatments. These treatments depend on type of acne, skin type and how much money you have (unfortunately this appears to be a very important aspect of medicine).

Treatment of acne scars is expensive.

Never jump and see the first physician about treatment of acne scars. Many people have gone that route and have had an even worse result. So be realistic. There is no treatment that can cure your scars completely but most can make some difference in your skin. Read the condition you have, find out who is a skin physician treating acne, ask for credentials, talk to other people and select your health provider well.

The current treatments for acne include:

- Injection of dermal filler to fill up depressed
scars. The cosmetic benefits of these fillers last
anywhere from 3-9 months
- Sometimes fat can be injected into the scars. Fat
lasts longer than collagen type fillers but is also
a lot more expensive.
- Dermabrasion is only effective for superficial acne
scars. Plus, one needs numerous sessions. The results
with dermabrasion are mediocre at best
- Lasers can help remodel and minimize scars. The latest
lasers have fewer side effects and can improve the scar
significantly. Lasers are also very expensive

Other methods of treating acne scars include skin grafting and injection of steroids. Before you undergo any treatment, get in touch with a skin doctor whom you can trust. Do not fall for a trial and error treatment. If the physician says try this and we will see what happens means he/she is clueless. You want a treatment that will work and improve your skin. Remember, there is no guarantee that any treatment can completely bring back your skin to normal- so do not rush. Even after you have selected a physician, ask questions. Who know this time delay may even help your scar spontaneously disappear.

Acne Scars 101

Acne is a upsetting skin disorder. There are millions of individuals who develop acne in their adolescent years and the experience sucks. The majority of individuals do get over their acne without much ado. However, a fair number of individuals are unlucky and develop prolonged/repeated episodes of acne often leading to development of ugly scars. No matter what anyone says, acne scars can make life miserable.

Why only some people develop acne scars and others remains a puzzle. One individual may develop a single pimple and the darn thing ends up as an ugly scar and then there are some individuals who have multiple acne and end up with a clear face. Anyway, acne scars are classified as:

- Depressed scars- meaning that the scar drops into the skin
- Ice pick scar
- Thick raised scar – resembles a keloid

Most experts believe that acne scars occur because the body senses an injury and tries to repair it. Often this repair is faulty and the end result is a scar. All scars are due to an excess of fibrous tissue.

There is a tremendous variation in who develops a scar and to what degree. Some types of acne are more prone to scar formation and this is particularly true of inflammatory nodular cystic variety. Nodular cystic acne usually affects the deeper layers of skin.

Consumers should understand that just because an acne scar occurs does not mean that it will be permanent. In many cases, the scars lighten up and sometimes may even disappear. In most people, the body attempts to remodel the acne scar. However, in some individuals this remodeling does not occur and the scar persists.

Can Red Wine Prevent Aging- part 2

Soon one or two health food companies heard about Resveratrol and the next thing you know- this chemical was on every cosmetic cream, lotion, potion gel, liquid, and soap.

Natural Resveratrol is commonly found in skin of red grapes and functions as an anti fungal agent in the vineyards. During the fermentation process, the Resveratrol is preserved and remains functional. So how does Resveratrol work as an anti aging agent? Some claim that it is so great that it really does not matter. Others say that this substance makes you eat less, hence you do not gain weight, and you live longer. The studies performed by scientists claimed that all animals including rats, monkeys and apes lived a lot longer when given red wine. Further, the research also revealed that red wine decreased cholesterol and helped control blood pressure.

Is this all true? Well, all the stories are reported by people who sell Resveratrol. They claim that people who drink red wine regularly live a lot longer, have no heart disease and their skin is smooth, wrinkle free and very soft.

So should we all drink red wine?

Yes, these vendors say. All red wines contain Resveratrol. Wines from Canada generally contain more of Resveratrol than those sold in California. This is thought to be due to the increased moisture and humidity in the north atmosphere. The increased humidity allows the fungus to thrive and thus grapes produce more Resveratrol to kill the fungus.

So how much wine should one drink?

Well if you drink too much you may die prematurely from liver disease. So the experts say drink one glass of red wine

So the next time you lift your Chardonnay or Pinot Grigio for a toast, remember, besides friendship and good times, you are also gaining your youth, getting rid of your wrinkles and of course becoming a better lover- viva la France.
.

I

Red Wine- Can it really stop aging?

For decades everyone has been looking for the magic pill to reverse or stop aging. Researchers have traveled to the Amazon forest, Australian barrier reef, the red sea, the dead sea and even to the Gobi desert- but Lo and Behold, the most potent anti aging product has always been found on the corner street- in the liquor store. Red wine.

For the past few years, everyone has been writing about this great social beverage. There is enough on cyberspace about red wine to fill up libraries. It can reverse aging, it can erase wrinkles, it can make one look young, it can increase libido (sex always pops up with any anti-aging chemical), it can make your skin smooth, it can make you rich and so on. But is red wine really the Fountain of Youth? Should we all drink it and also force it down the throats of individuals who look old?

A lot of hype about red wine and anti aging originates from Europe. Some people initially claimed that it was waters of the Riviera which made red wine special, other felt that it was grapes from Marseille, some claimed it was the soil and yet others felt it was red wine plus French cuisine. And these stories continued and soon the myth propagated to the USA.

So does red wine halt aging? Can it take away your wrinkles? Or is it like all other anti aging products- just a bunch of BS?

Scientists got their red wines samples and soon discovered that it contained a chemical called Resveratrol. This agent was extensively studied in the laboratory and found to be a natural anti oxidant. Researchers showed that when rats were given red wine to drink, gosh, they started to live longer and started to become better lovers. The rats cuddled more often and were always ready to mate. No one mentioned anything about rat wrinkles.

Over The Counter Acne Medications Part 4

Azelaic Acid

Azelaic acid is a decarboxylic acid hyped up to cure every type of skin disorder, including acne. There are many cosmetic products which contain azelaic acids including soaps, liquids, creams, shampoos, gels, and pastes. The acid only works for the mildest acne. Azelaic acid has been heavily marketed as being an agent to treat wrinkles, acne, fine lines, and cellulite and so on - two words- BS. Only the 20% azelaic acid works well for some individuals with acne but this concentration can also cause severe skin dryness and blister formation. The lower strength azelaic acid is just about as effective as urine in treating acne- meaning useless.

There are also many creams containing azelaic acid which is applied twice a day. Some individuals do develop skin irritation and redness with the cream. The creams have also been known to cause skin discoloration- so beware

So what should the consumer do?

First, almost all of the above products have been mixed and formulated with exotic compounds like collagen, hyaluronic acid, tea extracts, lemon grass, amino acids, water from dead sea, sediment from lake Victoria, botanicals from the Amazon and the list is endless- all these formulas for acne are very expensive, they do not work and should be avoided.

The treatment of acne starts at home. Start with basic hygiene, wash your face with a bland soap, do not squeeze your pimples, and avoid all fragrant creams. Most perfumes, fragrances, and lotions contain a number of synthetic chemicals which can worsen your acne.

If you have excess oil, wash your face -3 times day. Do not go and buy any fancy soap- they are all useless and do not make any difference (except make you smell nice). Just get a bland soap which will wash the oils. The less you muck around the better for your skin. Do not scrub too hard as this can lead to more skin irritation. Avoid the sun and be patient. Acne takes time to heal. Finally, avoid cyberspace and health care workers- most of them are charlatans when it comes to treatment of mild acne. They give you a lot of hope with false promises. Money and medicine have always been a bad mix.

Over The Counter Acne Medications Part 3

Glycolic Acid

There are many chemical peels designed to treat acne, one of them is glycolic acid. Glycolic acid works by peeling of dead skin layers and replacing it with fresh, smoother, and younger looking skin. It unplugs skin pores and also removes the oil. For home use, glycolic comes as a 10% solution. In the majority of cases, these low strength peels are a complete waste of money. Only the mildest acne ever gets better. Plus, it does not work in everyone. With repeat applications, it also dries the skin. The higher strength peels are better but too risky for use at home without supervision. Final point- low strength glycolic acid peels are junk.

Salicylic Acid

A lot has been written about salicylic acid as a peeling agent for acne. It comes in various concentrations and is easily available. Unfortunately the low concentration salicylic acid is crap. It rarely works. The higher strength (20-30 percent) peels do work but are best applied at a spa. These acids can remove blackheads and should be applied twice a day. There is no difference between benzyl peroxide and salicylic acid. If you do not see a difference in your acne in about 2 weeks, salicylic acid will never work for you.

Sulfur Preparations

There was a time when sulfur was used to treat acne- however, since 1920, many better products have been developed. In short- sulfur smells awful, can cause skin discoloration, and does not always work. There are tons of sulfur products available today. Sulfur is a keratolytic agent meaning it can remove blackheads and can also kill bacteria. Sulfur products do not always work, they are expensive, and they also can cause allergic reactions. There are sulfur containing soaps, creams, lotions, liquids and pastes- one word- avoid them. You are better off not using anything if you only have sulfur available.

Benzyl peroxide

Benzyl peroxide has been used for decades to treat acne. It is known to kill the bacteria that is associated with acne. It also act like an abrasive agent- meaning that it will shed off the dead skin and replace it with new skin. Today, it is a decent home made agent for individuals who have acne pustules.

Benzyl peroxide is available in various strengths (2.5 to 10 percent). However, higher strength have not been shown to be better than the lower strength. In fact the higher strengths generally cause more skin irritation. Benzyl peroxide is available as a water based formula. This is preferable as it causes less drying than the alcohol based formulas. It should be applied as a light paste 1-2 times a day.
The most common side effect of Benzyl peroxide is skin irritation. The high strength benzyl peroxide can cause intense redness and itching. Before applying benzyl peroxide, always apply a few drops and see what happens. If you develop intense itching, redness, blisters, or pain, then you have an allergy and you should not use it.

Benzyl peroxide is also a potent oxidizing agent and when it comes into contact with linen, or clothes, you will see dark stains. For best use, apply the ointment in the morning so it will be dry by night time. If you apply it at night time, use linen that you do not care if they get stained.

Does it work?

Unfortunately, benzyl peroxide works in less than 10% of individuals and in many cases it stops working after repeated application. The results after benzyl peroxide are also slow. Sometimes one has to wait several weeks before you see any difference in the acne. For those who have never tried benzyl peroxide, it may be worth a try and it may work for you. Always buy the smallest amount and test for allergy first.

Over The Counter Acne Medications

Acne can be a real hassle and no one knows how to best treat it. if you speak to 20 different people, you will get 100 different answers, each answer more crazier than the previous one. If you were to go to 10 different doctors, you will most likely get 30 different prescriptions and all of them do diddly squat.

For the consumer it is important to know one thing. whenever you see lots of treatment for one medical ailment- this is because no one knows how to cure the problem-. On cyberspace, everything underneath the sun is being sold as a treatment for acne. You can buy lotions, potions, soaps, creams, llama urine, polar bear’s blood, donkey’s scrotum, duck’s arse, green tea extracts, yellow tea extracts, blue tea extracts and so on (got the picture!- a lot of bull s..t therapies). Today if you do not have a job, make up an acne medication, and start selling it online- incredibly people will buy it.

The majority of stuff sold on cyberspace and in many stores is absolutely crap. So save your money.

Only a handful of products work for acne. The unfortunate thing is that even the products that do work are not consistent or reliable, nor do they work in everyone. There are a number of home made remedies to treat acne and this is where one should begin.

The three common techniques of getting rid of spider veins are sclerotherapy, intense light therapy and laser.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy basically involves injection of spider veins with an irritant chemical. The chemical causes collapse of spider veins and this eventually causing clearing of the vein. Sclerotherapy only works for spider veins and not varicose veins. The solution must be injected into the spider vein and then one wears a compression garment for about a week. Each spider vein requires a separate injection. Sure, there is pain with the procedure. The procedure is done as an outpatient, it is quite cheap and has little downtime.

The majority of individuals require multiple sessions because after 20 needles sticks most patients want to stop. After the procedure, bruising, redness, and mild tenderness is common. If your physician goofs up, the irritant chemical can also leak out and cause permanent darkening of the skin which is worse than what you had before.

Intense Light Therapy:

Intense light therapy (ILP) is same as a laser. It uses light to generate heat which then destroys the spider veins. There are many such light devices. The benefit of IPL is that it can also be used to treat deeper skin lesions- but this also hurts more. IPL is also more expensive than sclerotherapy and sometimes does not work. Most individuals require multiple sessions to get rid of spider veins.

Today, there are many types of lasers each with their on pros and cons. In general, most lasers work well. The most important criteria is to seek a physician who has experience. The laser treatments are done as outpatient. The laser is aimed at spider veins and zaps it. The heat energy destroys the vein. In all cases, the spider vein does not immediately disappear but gradually disappears in 4-6 weeks.
