Fraxel laser and acne scars Part 3

Can one have complications after the fraxel?

Sure, Fraxel is after all a heat source. Lasers can burn, cause scars and even change color of skin. Some individuals do develop either excess darkening or whitening of skin. These skin discolorations do not always revert back to normal.

Does Fraxel work for all acne scars?

No unfortunately, not all individuals benefit from the fraxel. The reasons are unknown. At least 30-50 percent of individuals with acne scars see no response to Fraxel. In the other 50-60 percent of individuals who do see benefit, the results vary from mild to moderate (Excellent results are only claimed by physicians).

When does one see an improvement in acne scars?

Sometimes never. The results of fraxel for treatment of acne scars are not immediate or guaranteed. Once the fraxel is used, it remodels the under surface of the scar. The process of healing usually takes about 4-6 weeks. Most patients begin to see the first results after 2 months. With future fraxel sessions, the results start to appear a little quicker.

Is fraxel a permanent therapy for acne scars?

In most cases, if Fraxel erases acne scars then the skin treatment is long lasting (few months to a few years). However, if you do develop acne again, there is a chance to reform scars (this means, NO, it is not permanent).

What is cost of Fraxel for acne scars?

This is difficult to answer and depends on severity of your acne, your skin type and which physician you are dealing with. In general, fraxel treatment per session can cost anywhere from $600-$2,000. There are no refunds.

Is fraxel treatment covered by any health insurance plan?

Unfortunately fraxel treatments are considered cosmetic in nature and not covered by Medicare or any other health insurance plan. However, most physicians will try to arrange a payment plan for you- not because you can get your skin problem treated but because they can make money of you.
