Luscious Lips: Lip Augmentation 101 part 2

Is there a permanent dermal filler for the lips?

No, despite what the physicians claim, no dermal filler is permanent. The most permanent dermal filler will only last a few years. Nothing lasts forever- this is the law of nature.

What types of lip dermal fillers are available?

The more common lip fillers today include:

- Artecoll
- Collagen
- Cosmoderm
- Dermalogen
- Fascia
- Restylane
- Gore-Tex
- Fat
- Hyaloform
- Perlane
- Zyderm
- Zyplast

How is lip augmentation done?

Before the injection, the physician will apply a topical anesthetic to numb the area. Despite what is claimed, lip augmentation does hurt a wee bit. There are some dermal fillers which can only be inserted in the lips by making a small incision along the upper lining of your lip. The area of the injection is marked and with a very fine needle the dermal filler is inserted. There are some dermal fillers already mixed with a local anesthetic and hurt less. However, beauty does come at a certain price and the initial needle stick does sting.

What is recovery like?

After the injections, there is some degree of swelling and bruising. The pain and swelling usually subside over the next 48 hours. Most individuals recover within 2-3 days but those with surgical implants take a little longer to recover.

What are side effects of lip augmentation?

Like any surgical procedure, there are risks associated with lip augmentation. The following are the most commonly reported side effects:

- allergy to the implant
- bleeding -rare
- pain- mild to moderate
- numbness -rare
- uneven lips
- infection-rare
- thickened nodule at injection site
