For the majority of individuals, acne only occurs on the face. However, for some individuals, acne can also occur on the back. Back acne is common in both males and females and often worse in the winter season. Because of physical difficulty in looking at the back, there are countless other individuals with back acne who never come to medical attention. Some experts believe that back acne is just as common as facial acne, and the numbers are under reported.
The majority of individuals are told that they have back acne by their friends, colleagues, or spouse. In many cases, it is the girlfriend/boyfriend who first remarks that the individual has back acne.
A vast number of individuals realize that they have back acne while going to the gym or sports parlors where there are brightly lit mirrors. Back acne is most common in athletes and individuals involved in close contact sports like wrestling.
Back acne is not life threatening but it can affect one’s social life. Most young men and women who develop back acne become shy, stop wearing low cut garments, and do not go to gyms. The problem with back acne is that one never develops one pimple. Back acne is usually associated with large red pimples which are often obvious and ugly to look at.
